Chemo-radiotherapy for oesophageal cancer

Several trials have supported the superiority of chemotherapy used synchronously with radiotherapy for improving the survival of patients with oesophageal cancer. The usual dose of radiation in these ‘combined modality’ trials has been 50Gy.
 
A recently reported trial at the May 2000 American Society of Clinical Oncology has shown that there is no extra benefit in increasing the radiotherapy dosage up to 60Gy+.
