Randomised trial of chemotherapy versus chemotherapy and immunotherapy for metastatic melanoma

In a trial recently reported from M.D. Anderson Hospital in Texas, the doctors studied 190 patients with metastatic melanoma, treated either by chemotherapy with a standard first line regime (viz. Cis-platin, vinblastine and dacarbazine) to the same chemotherapy with immunotherapy (alpha-interferon and interleukin). There was a clearly significant advantage to those patients who received the immunotherapy in addition to the chemotherapy, both in terms of response rate and overall survival.
