ST1571 in gastrointestinal stromal tumours

Gastrointestinal stromal tumours/sarcomas are characterised by the expression of c-kit proto-oncogene product (KIT) and tend to respond poorly to orthodox chemotherapy. ST1571, a signal transduction inhibitor and potent inhibitor of critical c-kit function has been used in therapy of gastrointestinal stromal tumours. This drug has already made an important entry into the therapy of CML (chronic myeloid leukaemia)by virtue of these properties. In two multi-istitutional studies reported at the influential American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in San Francisco (May 2001), both groups reported very promising results from early studies with good regressions of tumoour in these otherwise refractory cancers.
